The Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is the quietest car in the MandryCabrio fleet. A 181 hp electric motor does the driving, backed by a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine that acts as a generator and joins in when you ask for everything: 212 hp of combined system output, delivered through an e-CVT with no gearchange to interrupt it. The 315 Nm of electric torque arrives from zero revs, so the car moves away from traffic lights in complete silence and keeps pulling all the way up a mountain road.
The 17 kWh battery gives around 70 km of pure electric range - more than a day of resort driving in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Las Américas without the petrol engine ever starting. Plug it in overnight and the daily cost of moving around the south of the island drops close to zero. On longer runs the hybrid system takes over automatically and returns around 4 l/100km, with no range anxiety and no need to plan charging stops at all.
At 4.9 metres it is a full-size sedan with genuine rear-seat space for three adults and a 439-litre boot that swallows four suitcases. This 2020 car is white with a light leather interior, digital instrument cluster, 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, push-button gear selector, parking cameras and the full Honda Sensing suite of driver assists.
It is the car for business guests who need to arrive quietly and comfortably, for families of four or five with real luggage, and for anyone who wants an unhurried, effortless way to cover the island. In the MandryCabrio fleet it is the sensible premium choice - the comfort and road presence of a large sedan at a price well below the convertibles.
Our Tenerife guide points it at the routes where it makes the most sense: the TF-1 coastal motorway where the hybrid system settles into its most efficient rhythm, the TF-21 climb to Teide National Park where the electric torque handles the gradient without a sound, and the long north-coast run to La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz where a quiet, comfortable sedan beats anything sporty.
Tenerife is built for a plug-in hybrid. Around 70 km of electric range covers a full day in the southern resorts - Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Las Américas and back - without the petrol engine starting once, and an overnight charge at the hotel resets it. Go further and nothing changes: the hybrid system takes over on the TF-1 and the TF-21 climb to Teide, returning around 4 l/100km with no charging stops to plan. The 315 Nm of electric torque pulls the 2,000-metre ascent without noise or effort, and the 439-litre boot takes four airport suitcases. Its one limit is honest: at 4.9 metres it is a big car for the old streets of La Laguna and Garachico, so park on the edge and walk in.
